Active Optical Cables (AOC) vs. Copper HDMI: When to Switch?
Published on Jun 27, 2026 • By MX Engineer
Traditional copper HDMI cables are excellent for short distances. However, once you need to run an HDMI connection from a rack to a wall projector or a remote workstation over 5 meters, copper wires experience resistance and signal loss, leading to frame drops or blank screens.
Enter Active Optical Cables (AOC)
AOC HDMI cables utilize fiber optics instead of copper strands. The electrical signal is converted to light at the source connector, transmitted down optical fibers, and converted back at the display. This allows full 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 speeds over lengths up to 30 meters with absolutely zero latency or signal loss.
